1.READING

  • What phrases seem to come up all the time?

  • Note the context, mood, formality and the type of ‘personality’ it reflects

  • Favorite the texts that you see yourself using later

2. LISTENING / WATCHING

  • What sounds different when spoken versus what you would have expected?

  • Note contractions, linking sounds, the ‘rhythm’ of the sentence and utterances

  • Favorite the audios you have difficulty understanding currently, review them later

3.WRITING

  • Write as much as you can in the target language

  • Indicate areas of doubt with a (?)

  • Rewrite sentences, after receiving feedback

4.SPEAKING

  • Speak as much as you can in the target language

  • Talk around parts you are unsure of, using the vocabulary you have

  • Repeat what you spoke with newly acquired vocabulary, after receiving feedback

5.TRANSCRIBING (combines listening and writing)

  • Listen to a recording in the target language, writing down words you recognize

  • Indicate areas of doubt with a (?)

  • Rewrite the text post-feedback.  Read along while re-listening to the audio

6.COMPREHENSION

  • Translate a text or transcription (translate from or into the target language)

  • Write natural sentence structures and expressions instead of translating verbatim

  • Confirm the translations make sense by using them in other sentences

7.PRACTICING

  • Add ‘favorite’ words / phrases into a flashcard app, include notes about context

  • Mimic the way native speakers talk to absorb natural rhythm and intonation

  • Try out a phrase you are learning through telling stories or responding using the new phrase

8.WRITING

  • Use the tools within WhatsApp to suggest corrections ( *bold* ~strikeout~ _italics_ )

  • Offer to rewrite an entire phrase if it helps make the corrected version sound more natural

  • Prioritize teaching frequently heard phrases and ones that will come in handy based on that person’s environment

  • Encourage the other person to use what they have learned immediately in a sentence

(Remember that “Less is more”  and prioritize correcting the top 2-3 most impactful things)

9.PRONUNCIATION - Prioritize what gets corrected

  • First, select words or phrases that you could not recognize even when heard within context

  • Next, select words that could be misunderstood based on their proximity to other words

  • Finally, help others refine their pronunciation to boost confidence and intelligibility

10.ENCOURAGEMENT

>>> Remember to Take it easy!

  • It’s easy to find fault in others, particularly if you are someone that is typically hard on yourself

  • Learning languages does not follow a linear path, and that’s okay

  • The most important thing is to recognize progress in yourself and in others

>>Celebrate the small wins

  • When you hear or read something that impresses you (even a little), call it out!

  • This also helps others in the group learn from that person’s contribution

  • Recognizing progress in others sets a tone that encourages others to take risks and to contribute as well

>Be Patient with yourself and with others

  • Allow others the opportunity to explain things in a different way or to offer a different point of view

  • Harness the power of different perspectives, particularly when it comes to talking about culture/regionalisms

  • Take a breather!  If you are feeling burnt-out or getting FOMO, press pause and return later when you can
